In Pursuit of the Perfect Arm – from Guitar Players to Dishwashers

To mark the end of the 8 year long development of its latest dishwasher spray arm, AEG is celebrating the significance of the arm in all its glory. Therefore they are now launching the site www.stateofthearm.com: paying a tribute to the importance of the arm in the worlds of sports, culture, technology and telling the stories of the engineers behind the development of one of the biggest arms in time.

It took AEG eight years to develop a new dishwasher spray arm. Almost three times longer than the average car model roll out. The lengthy journey is both an engineering feat and a story about breaking old habits. Dishwasher design hadn’t been touched since the 70’s and, like any change, it seldom comes without resistance.

- If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, they say. And there is some truth to that. However, to make things perfect, you have to fix things that work, says Fredrik Dellby, Vice President Modularisation AEG.

- To make an arm that was state of the art, we had to think outside the box. Get out of the kitchen and keep an open mind. When changing a habit, you must stay committed and motivated. This was our way, says Fredrik Dellby.

The realization that human arms do not move in a much systemized way when washing up a plate, led to the idea of making a spray arm that made a irregular spraying pattern. And it proved to tackle modern dish loads better, than a regular pattern ever could.

On stateofthearm.com, we gathered experts’ testimonials ranging from a professor of electroacoustic music with insights into the strumming arm of Bruce Springsteen, to a Tae-Kwando Master explaining how a human arm can split thick wood. The blog is launched on the 19th of November. Here is a preview of what you can expect to find and learn about arms that are state of the art:

- The arm is the means through which the energy is transferred from the body of the musician to the instrument. Its movement creates rhythm and dynamics which then are characteristic of the musician and the instrument, says William Brunson, composer and professor of electroacoustic music and a self-confessed guitar nerd.

- How can an eagle fly without wings? How can a dancer dance without arms? Impossible, says Margarita Levina, ballet professor and a former Moscow professional dancer for 23 years.

- You have to start a movement and get the energy from there. The arm is the tool to use that strength to gain the energy, says Ji-Pyo Lim, Tae-Kwondo black belt master.
