Filters for cooker hoods

Your cooker hood depends on filters for the optimal performance. Regular maintenance and replacement is essential for efficient functioning of the kitchen fan. Over time, grease builds up in old filters limiting air flow and causing bad odours leading to a reduction in the fan capacity and hood performance. Use the following guide to understand which filters to buy according to hood installation and when to replace.

1

CHARCOAL ODOUR FILTERS

Charcoal odour filters are installed exclusively in recirculation mode hoods and can absorb unpleasant odours and fumes before conveying filtered air back in your kitchen. Replacement and cleaning of the charcoal filter is essential to guarantee the hood optimal functioning and a high odours absorption performance guaranteeing a fresher and comfortable quality of the indoor air while cooking.

Different carbon filters

Disposable, with 50% filtration

The OdourClean Carbon Filter gives you up to 50%* fresher kitchen air by removing cooking odours before recirculating filtered air back into your kitchen. Replace every 4–6 months** to ensure your hood performs at its best.

Washable, with 70% filtration

The washable OdourClean Plus Carbon Filter removes up to 70%* of cooking smoke and odours and sends fresher air back to your kitchen. For optimal hood performance, wash it every 3-4 months** and replace it every 2-3 years**.

Renewable, with 90% filtration

The OdourClean Pro Carbon Filter adsorbs up to 90%* of all unpleasant odours in your kitchen. To ensure optimal hood performance heat the filter in the oven every 5–6 months**. This filter lasts up to 5 years**.

Fleece filter

Fleece filter

These are disposable filters that must be discarded and replaced when saturated. They are not washable and usually need to be cut to size. It is advisable to change these filters once a month.

Aluminium mesh filter

Aluminium mesh filter

Aluminium mesh filters may discolour to light grey or take on a matte appearance. This does not, however, impact on the filter's efficiency. The grease in filters that are not cleaned for extended periods can resinify and will not be removed during cleaning. They must be replaced.

Stainless steel mesh filter

Stainless steel mesh filter

Stainless steel filters are visually appealing and do not discolour when cleaned in the dishwasher (Intensive programme 60–70°C).

How to clean and re-use your filter

There are two simple steps to regenerate and re-use your filter. First, place the filter in a dishwasher and clean using an intensive programme (60°C, with no other dishes). Next, leave it to dry in the air or in a preheated oven (refer to the operating instructions for further details). The expected service life is 3–4 years depending on the individual filter and its use.

How to use your cooker hood

The cooker hood should be switched on a few minutes before starting to cook so that the air in the kitchen begins to move.

• Once cooking is finished, the fan should be left running for 10 minutes so odours in the room continue to be absorbed and the active carbon filter can dry out.

• Kitchens with a recirculation hood should be aired after cooking to remove moisture from the room.

Size and placement of hood

Island hoods should be wider and deeper than the hob. Wall hoods, however, can be the same width as the hob. The distance between hood and hob is usually between 40 and 75 cm. A larger distance is often required for gas hobs.

Recirculation or Extraction?

There are two ways in which hoods manage the vapour and grease produced when you cook. In recirculation mode, cooker hoods use a fan to suck in vapours and pass them through a filter made from metal (permanent filter) or fleece (disposable filter). This removes grease and absorbs odours with an integrated active carbon filter. The cleaned air is then returned to the room. In extraction mode, cooker hoods use a fan to suck in vapours and pass them through the same filters, but the filtered air is then extracted outdoors. For chimney hoods, the exhaust air can be routed through the wall behind the hood or through a lateral extractor duct.

Recirculation benefits airflow sketch

Recirculation benefits

• Easy installation

• No additional structural work required (no need to break through walls)

• Hardly any loss of energy due to the discharge of warm indoor air through the cooker hood over a long period of time

Extraction benefits airflow sketch

Extraction benefits

• High airflow rate

• Excess moisture is conveyed outdoors

• High effectiveness at low hood settings

• No regular replacement costs for metal filters

• Usually quieter than recirculating hoods if exhaust ducts are laid properly

• No additional costs for active carbon filters

What Extraction Rate does my cooker hood require?

The airflow rate indicates how many cubic metres of air the cooker hood will displace per hour, expressed as m3/h. The ventilation performance is determined by the room volume and the required air exchange rate.

Important considerations

Municipal building codes may include regulations on installing wall vents for extractor hoods. During your planning phase, it is advisable to contact your local building authority and check whether any such regulations exist.

As vapours and odours may interfere with neighbours, it is also advisable to obtain approval from them for the location of a wall vent connected to an extraction hood. It is important to try to place the sleeve as high as possible and maintain the maximum distance possible from neighbours' windows (at least 2 m).

Cooker hood noise levels

To keep noise down in your kitchen, choose a fan with a low decibel value (dB). The sound level of cooker hoods is dependent on the selected power level and lies between 40 and 70 dB.

The differences in efficiency and noise level depend on the type of motor/fan chosen. And also whether kitchen vapours are extracted via edge or surface extraction. Airflow noises in the extractor ducting have a stronger impact on noise levels than the cooker hood itself.

Lighting

Most cooker hoods are equipped with halogen lamps (between 20 and 40 W) to illuminate the hob. Energy-saving lamps (9 to 11 W) are also used. The use of LED lamps is interesting from an energy-saving viewpoint and is on the rise overall. These lamps consume around 2.5 W each.

Benefits of LED lights vs. normal lamps

LED lights reduce energy consumption by up to 70%.
Quicksilver, sodium, plumb or other heavy metals are not used in their production.

And air pollution and heat generation is reduced. LED lights also have a long life expectancy of up to 50,000 hours/ 10 years. And cost less to maintain.

Filters

Cooker hoods feature the same basic design. They contain a grease filter, and in the case of recirculation hoods, also an active carbon filter.

The main differences are in their efficiency and noise levels, with the type of motor/fan chosen and whether kitchen vapours are neutralised via edge or surface extraction.
