In order to make your search for a new oven easy, we’ve put together a comprehensive and useful buying guide with helpful information, so that you can make sure you buy the right oven for you, with the right features, for all your cooking needs.

First let's start with the type of oven.

Now that you have decided whether to get a freestanding oven or built-in oven, the next options to choose from are whether you need a single oven or a double oven.

Single ovens are also a great choice for your home if you don't have too much space available. For people who plan on doing a lot of cooking, then a double oven tends to be the popular choice. Double ovens give you more options, as having two ovens allows you to cook a roast in one oven and use the other oven for baking a pie at the same time. Having a lot of guest over for a feast often means that timing is important when preparing meals, this is where a double oven can help give you the cooking flexibility you need. 

Now that you have chosen the aesthetic and build function of your oven, it's time to choose what fuel type you want it to run on. Ovens come built to use the following fuel: Electric, gas, or dual fuel.

Electric ovens tend to have the latest features and be more technologically advanced than gas ovens, and many users find them more convenient. Also, before you buy a gas oven, you need to make sure that your kitchen is equipped to allow for the installation of a gas oven. If you don’t have the proper gas piping necessary for a gas oven, then an Electric oven is the way to go.

Fan-operated (Fan assisted)
Fan ovens are also known as convection ovens, this category of oven uses a fan to circulate air throughout the oven. This function is great for dishes that require delicate cooking.

Conventional (static)
A static oven is your classic conventional oven that uses heating elements usually on the top and the bottom to radiate heat in the oven and cook food.


Multifunction
Another type of fan oven is a multifunction oven. Like its name sake suggest, it offers several different cooking settings, so you are able to try different cooking methods such as baking, roasting, and grilling. The combination of a heating element around the fan helps distribute hot air throughout the entire cooking chamber. So, unlike a conventional oven that can only evenly cook the food on one oven rack position, a multifunction oven can evenly cook food at various oven rack positions.


Gas ovens
Now let us take a closer look at gas ovens. When it comes to ovens that use gas, there are two types to choose from, LPG or natural gas.

Note: Since these ovens use gas you need to follow the requirements designated by your country on how to install them.


• Conventional gas ovens

Conventional gas ovens use natural gas. Admirers of gas ovens love them because gas ovens give you more heat control than electric ovens. Gas ovens tend to have a shorter preheat time. The heat generated from gas ovens also tends to have more moister, this is great when cooking roast and other dishes that you are concerned about coming out dry. Note: Since these ovens use gas you need to get them installed by a certified professional.


• Dual fuel

Can’t decide between an electric oven or a gas oven? Well with a dual fuel range you can get the best of both worlds. A dual fuel range has a gas hob, with an electric oven. The gas hob provides precise heat control. While the electric oven helps you to cook food evenly and is great for baking.

Note: AEG offers a broad range of electric and dual fuel cookers but not with conventional gas ovens.

Self-cleaning pyrolytic
Pyrolytic ovens will heat up to 500°C, reducing dirt to a fine ash that you can simply wipe away with a cloth.

Catalytic
Catalytic liners make cleaning easier by absorbing grease spills. And by heating the oven to 200°C or higher, the grease is then oxidised leaving the surface clean. Something good to keep in mind is that catalytic oven liners, come in two options: Replaceable and non-replaceable. The reason this is important is because catalytic liners lose their cleaning effectiveness over time. So, for an oven that has replaceable catalytic liners, all you need to do is to replace the liners. But for an oven that has catalytic liners that are not replaceable, once the catalytic liners lose their effectiveness, you will have to buy an entirely new oven.

Aqua clean
Keep your oven naturally clean with steam, created by humidity inside the oven.

Steam cleaning
Steam cleaning is a built-in cleaning program in steam ovens that remind you when it's time to clean. Select from a variety of options and the oven does the work.

Temperature probe
This is the easy way to monitor the core temperature of your food. A temperature probe can also automatically turn the oven off when cooking is complete in regard to your preferred level of doneness, whether you want your steak medium rare or well done. It also works for other types of food, helping you remove the guesswork of when a dish is done, whether you’re roasting a chicken or baking a pie.

Grill
Grilling is the easy way to brown, toast, or crisp your dishes. A great convenience to have is an oven with a separate grill. It gives you more space to cook larger meals.

Fast preheat
Save time with the fast preheat feature. It gets the oven to your desired heat quick so you can start cooking fast.

Plate warming
Have a large family? Have a lot of guest about to come over for a party? Well thanks to the plate warming function you can easily warm up a stack of plates. The plate warming setting uses the fan and the heating element around the fan to warm up your plates. So, your food stays warm for longer after plating it.

Soft-close doors
We all tend to multitask when we are in the kitchen and it’s easy to forget to quietly close the oven door, which can result in a loud noise from the door slamming shut. But thanks to soft closing door technology, the oven door always shuts softly and silently.

Rotisserie function
Make sure your meats come out juicy and succulent with the rotisserie function. It continuously spins meat or vegetables so that you can easily baste them.

Defrost setting
The defrost setting is an easier and faster way to defrost foods such as fruits and vegetables. It has a timer so you can choose how long to defrost an item. The time it takes to defrost an item will depend on its size.

Slow cook
Slow cooking is a healthy and tasty cooking option. It allows you to retain more of the nutrients of your food. It makes meat tender and softens root vegetables.

Pizza function
Whether you want it with just cheese and tomato sauce, or you want to get adventurous and add pineapples. The pizza function provides a great combination of heat so your pizza can get gentle browning, and a crispy bottom.

Dough proving
Many steam ovens have a helpful bread baking function that applies just the right amount of steam to make sure that the bread's surface is kept supple, so that the dough can rise for longer, helping you get the delicious results you desire.

Capacity
If you have a big household or frequently entertain, then getting an oven with a capacity that can handle cooking large meals is a good idea. Oven capacity is measured in litres:

70+ litres – Ideal for a bigger household of four or more

40 – 70 litres – Excellent for a house of three to four

35 – 40 litres – Just right for one or two people
