Cleaning the oven? Our tips and self-cleaning ovens
Cleaning the oven is a tedious task, but it has to be done at some point. Food residue, grease and baked-on crumbs quickly make the oven dirty and unhygienic, especially if you use it a lot. AEG gives you a number of tips on how to easily and quickly get the oven clean and fresh again and we explain what our self-cleaning ovens do to take the work off your hands.
How to clean the oven - our tips
To start with, it is very important to clean your oven regularly. Good maintenance ensures that you can enjoy your appliance for as long as possible. To help you with this, we have a number of tips for you to clean the oven.
Tip 1: Special cleaning agent - Use a special cleaning agent for metal surfaces, stubborn dirt and accessories with a non-stick coating. Aggressive cleaning agents can damage the oven and accessories.
Tip 2: Use a vacuum cleaner - Vacuum your oven? Why not. How often do you get crumbs on the bottom of your oven? Before they stick or burn, you can simply vacuum up the residue. So cleaning your oven doesn't always have to be difficult.
Tip 3: Use the power of lemons - Lemons contain many natural acids and antibacterial, disinfecting properties. Place a bowl of water with lemon slices in a heated oven at 200 to 250 degrees. The lemon will ensure that grease is dissolved and it will also ensure that your oven will literally smell lemon fresh again. After half an hour, all you have to do is wipe the oven with a cloth.
Tip 4: Vinegar - You will first need to loosen any burnt-on food residue when cleaning the oven. Fill the recess at the bottom of the oven with 250 ml of vinegar and let it dissolve for 30 minutes at room temperature. You will see that the burnt-on residue is easy to wipe away. You can also clean the baking tray this way.
Tip 5 : Soda - Soda is great for removing bad smells from your oven. To do this, preheat the oven to 200-250 degrees. Place an ovenproof dish with water and a cup of soda in the oven. Remove the dish from the oven after 30 minutes and wipe the oven clean with a sponge or cloth. You can also do this in combination with lemon.

That's why AEG has a wide range of self-cleaning ovens, so that cleaning the oven is a chore you don't have to worry about in the kitchen anymore. With a self-cleaning oven you save yourself a lot of work, but what types of self-cleaning ovens are there? AEG lists a number of self-cleaning ovens so that you can choose which oven suits you best.
Oven with pyrolytic cleaning
AEG ovens with a Pyrolytic cleaning system clean themselves. During the cleaning cycle, this oven reaches such high temperatures that food residues and caked-on grease are burned to ash. Make sure that all accessories are removed from the oven before you switch on the pyrolytic function. Before you start, remove the worst dirt and residues and clean the inner door with warm water so that residues cannot burn in. You can choose between two options:
- P1 is a cleaning cycle that lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes, you can choose this if the oven is not very dirty.
- P2 is the cycle you should use to remove stubborn dirt and baked-on residue and lasts for 3 hours.
You can also adjust the cleaning times yourself on these ovens. The oven door will remain closed until the appliance has cooled down sufficiently. When the cleaning cycle is over, you only need to sweep or vacuum away the burnt-on residues.
Cleaning the oven with steam
The AEG steam ovens clean themselves with water thanks to their steam function. How does this work? First remove as much dirt as possible by hand and remove the accessories from the oven. Then fill the water drawer completely (approximately 950 ml) and turn on the 'steam cleaning' function, this takes approximately 30 minutes. You can also use the Steam Cleaning Plus function, this cleaning session lasts 75 minutes. Spray a suitable cleaning agent over the inside of the oven and start the cleaning function. After 50 minutes the oven will give a signal, you can then clean the oven with a non-abrasive sponge and warm water or oven cleaners. Then close the door and press 'OK'. The oven will then be cleaned for another 25 minutes using steam. Please note that the oven must be cold when you start cleaning it.
Catalytic cleaning
The ovens with catalytic cleaning have catalytic oven walls. Do not clean these surfaces with abrasives, soap or other agents to prevent damage. The catalytic oven walls in the oven absorb grease and dirt and burn it at a high temperature, without leaving an odor. First clean the glass and turn on the catalytic function, the cleaning process takes an hour. After this process, you can wipe the bottom of the oven with a cloth or soft sponge.
