The Ultimate Student Laundry Guide
Moving away from home for the first time can be exciting, but for many, it also comes with an unexpected new challenge: doing their own laundry for the first time - something that the majority (55%) relied on their parents for before leaving home. From separating colours to understanding what all the symbols on the washing machine actually mean, laundry can be overwhelming, so we carried out a survey to understand what young people need help with most.
At what age do people master the washing machine?
It isn't uncommon for people not to learn how to do their own laundry until they reach university age; nearly two in five (37%) people didn't learn to do laundry until they were 18 or older. On the other hand, 44% of people learnt before the age of 16. Women tend to learn how to do their laundry earlier in life than men, with more than half (51%) of women learning before the age of 16 compared to a third (33%) of men. One in twenty (5%) men still haven't learned how to tackle laundry on their own, and neither have one tenth (10%) of the Gen Z population.
How do people learn to do laundry?
Over the years, the way in which people learn how to do their laundry has changed, as we’ve become increasingly reliant on the internet, more people have turned to video platforms like YouTube and TikTok to learn new skills. However, the majority (59%) of people still look to their parents to pick up the basics. More than a quarter (26%) figured out how to do their washing by themselves, whilst one in 20 (5%) made use of online videos and guides, and 7% sought advice from a friend or sibling.
The most searched laundry queries
Laundry can be confusing for amateurs and pros alike, and the search data proves it. Thousands still turn to Google with laundry queries - ranging from ‘does detergent kill bacteria’, which tops the list at 9,750 searches annually, to ‘do washing machines heat water’ (9,220), which closely follows. Whether learning for the first time or double-checking what they already know, dryers are another common area of confusion. A total of 8,110 people ask ‘can dryers shrink clothes’ each year, while 5,160 search ‘how long should a tumble dryer last’. Even the basics spark curiosity, with 3,700 annual searches for ‘is detergent the same as fabric softener’.
The items people struggle to wash the most
Even for those who have mastered the basics, there are certain items that challenge everyone. The items proving to be the most troublesome for Brits are trainers, with 60,300 annual UK searches for ‘how to wash trainers in washing machine’. Shoes in general are causing confusion, with 31,800 searches being made for ‘how to wash shoes in the washing machine’, closely followed by ‘how to wash a duvet’, which racks up 30,800 searches annually.
Which laundry tasks do students find most challenging?
While students get to grips with doing their laundry independently, some tasks are likely to trip them up more than others. Our research shows that the biggest laundry headaches are removing stains (25%), followed by selecting the right washing machine setting (22%), and choosing the right detergent or fabric softener, which is a challenge for one in six (15%). Other tricky tasks include knowing the right water temperature, which one in seven (13%) struggle with, and reading care labels, which is a bugbear for one in eight (12%). Meanwhile, fewer students struggle with sorting clothes by colour (8%) or using tumble dryers (5%).
The UK regions most (and least) confident in their laundry skills
When away from home for the first time, many young people’s first port of call when questions arise is to ring their parents. Students in Northern Ireland (89%) are the biggest culprits for phoning home when struggling with their laundry, followed by those in London (75%) and students in the North West (73%). Students in Scotland are the most clued up with laundry skills, ringing their parents for help the least (59%).
What students ask their parents about laundry
When it comes to what students ask their parents for help with, the most common question among males is, 'What temperature should I wash this at?'. Among females, the most frequent concern is selecting the appropriate setting or cycle, along with effective methods for removing stains.
Which setting or cycle should they use is also the most asked question among students in the South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber and Northern Ireland. ‘What temperature should I wash this at?’ is the most common query for those in Greater London and the North West, ‘How do I remove a specific stain?’ is the biggest problem for the South East, South West, East Midlands, North East and Scotland, whilst knowing how to separate your laundry by colour is the most common issue for students in the West Midlands and Wales.
Methodology
AEG analysed Google Search data from 2024-2025 to determine which laundry questions Brits ask most and which items they struggle to tackle the most.
We also conducted a nationally representative survey of 2000 Brits, including 1000 students, to gain insight into how confident people are at doing their own laundry when moving away from home for the first time.
